Ancienne porte du Palais de Justice, Paris (Old Gate of the Palace of Justice, Paris) is a 1854 ink by Charles Meryon, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white drawing of a heavy, arched gate made of metal bars. The gate is set into a stone wall, with a small window above it. In the background, you can see a row of buildings with pointed roofs, like an old cityscape. The lines are tight and precise, with some shading to show depth. The artist used a technique that lets them carve into metal plates to create the lines. This was a way to make detailed prints back in the 1800s. Next, look up etching to see how artists like this made their marks.
Charles Meryon (sometimes Méryon, 23 November 1821 – 14 February 1868) was a French artist who worked almost entirely in etching, as he had colour blindness.
