Entry of Marie de Medici into Amsterdam [plate 2 of 6] is a 1638 ink by Pieter Nolpe, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a group of riders on horseback crossing a shallow river. The horses are mid-stride, some carrying people in fancy hats and coats, while others hold reins or carry small children. In the background, a few ships sit on calm water, and the shore has simple plants. The artist used fine lines to show movement and detail, like the feathers in the hats or the ripples in the water. This is one of six prints about a royal visit to Amsterdam. Want to see more? Check out the technique: etching.
