History & Provenance
The painting's attribution to Palma Vecchio was once disputed but is now generally accepted. Art historians such as Giovanni Battista Cavalcaselle and Joseph Archer Crowe supported this attribution, noting damage from over-restoration, particularly to Holofernes' head. Later scholars, including György Gombosi and Giovanni Mariacher, confirmed the attribution, identifying it as a mature work.
