Anne Bill is a 1621 ink by Simon van de Passe, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows a woman’s face inside a round frame, looking straight ahead. Above her head, a cherub leans over, holding a banner with words. Around the frame, there are small scenes: a book with a skull on it, a ship at sea, and a few other odd symbols. The whole thing is drawn with fine lines and shading. The woman’s face is the main focus, but the extra details around it tell a story. The cherub’s banner reads something in Latin, and the tiny scenes might hint at bigger ideas—like time or memory. This is an example of engraving, a technique where artists carve into metal plates to make prints.
Simon van de Passe (1595–1647) was an artist, born in Cologne.
