William Herbert, Third Earl of Pembroke is a 1621 ink by Simon van de Passe, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a serious-looking man with a thick beard and mustache. He’s wearing a fancy ruff collar and a dark robe, holding a rolled-up paper in one hand. Above his head, there’s a coat of arms with a crown and strange symbols, and his name is written in big letters around him. The tiny lines and shading here make his face look almost three-dimensional. The artist used a lot of careful lines to show light and shadow. Look up engraving to see how this kind of detailed printmaking works.
Simon van de Passe (1595–1647) was an artist, born in Cologne.
