Still Life is a 1667 unspecified by Pieter Gallis, held at Rijksmuseum.
A blue-and-white bowl from China sits beside a crab on a wooden table. The crab’s shell glistens, and the bowl’s painted flowers look almost real. This painting shows how trade changed everyday life in the 1600s. Chinese porcelain was rare in Europe until Dutch ships started bringing it by the shipload. The bowl here would have cost a fortune—most people couldn’t afford it. Later, Dutch potters in Delft made cheaper versions.
