Max Rothschild, proprietor of the Sackville Gallery, acquired it next, before it was handled by Duveen Brothers, Inc. in London, New York, and Paris.
Andrew W. Mellon purchased the painting from Duveen in February 1930; it was formally deeded to The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust on 28 December 1934 and subsequently given to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in 1937.
Legacy
The painting's legacy is anchored in its acceptance by a leading national museum and sustained scholarly attention. After passing through the collections of Burney, Rothschild, and Mellon, it entered the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., as part of the Andrew W. Mellon donation in 1937.
