The work is an oil on canvas portrait, initially held by Jeanne Baudot in Louveciennes, who consigned it to Durand‑Ruel in New York between 1936 and 1947. Baudot bequeathed the painting to Jean Griot in 1957; it was acquired from Griot by Sam Salz in June 1962, shortly before Salz sold it to Paul Mellon on 4 May 1962.
The National Gallery of Art received the piece as a gift in 1985. The dating and visual representation derive from contemporary records.
