Specimens of Polyautography: The Lost Apple is a 1803 by Thomas Stothard, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This black-and-white print shows two figures standing in a dimly lit room. One person holds a child close, while the other leans on a tall staff. The background is filled with swirling lines and shadows, making the space feel heavy and mysterious. The artist used lots of cross-hatching—tiny overlapping lines—to create depth and texture. This was a common trick in prints to add drama without color. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how light and shadow create mood in art.
Thomas Stothard (17 August 1755 – 27 April 1834) was a British painter, illustrator and engraver.
