Nakamura Tomijuro and Nakamura Shichisaburo II as the Lovers Agemaki and Sukeroku is a 1753 by Torii Kiyonobu II, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This print shows two actors dressed in bright, patterned robes. One holds a fan-shaped parasol over them both, while the other plays a small hand drum. Behind them, a wooden fence and a river with birds flying over it frame the scene. Their faces are simple but expressive, and the background has wavy lines suggesting water and grass. The actors look like they’re performing a story, possibly from a famous play. The parasol’s shape and the actors’ costumes hint at a specific kind of theater from Japan.
