About this work

This painting shows two people standing side by side in a bright blue space. The woman on the left wears a dark blue sari with gold and red borders, holding her hands together. The man on the right has a red turban, a white cloth wrapped around his waist, and holds a yellow cloth in one hand. Notice how the colors pop against the blue background, making the figures stand out clearly. The artist used bold outlines and flat colors, which was common in this style. The story of this work

Overview

The painting depicts a Brahmin and his wife, part of a series of six works illustrating castes and occupations, each set against a plain blue background. The man is shown wearing white garments adorned with orange and yellow scarves, while the woman is dressed in navy blue. Transferred from the India Museum in 1879, the work was recorded in the 1880 register as two framed sets of colored illustrations of costumes, presented by P. F. Campbell-Johnston.
