About this work

This sketch shows a hillside with two large stone buildings. One has a tall tower, the other a flat roof with people on it. Trees and bushes cover the slopes below, and the mountains in the background are lightly drawn. The buildings look like old monasteries, perched high up. The artist used quick, light lines to suggest texture rather than fill in details. Next, check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see more sketches like this.

The story of this work

Overview

A drawing from 1850 depicts the Monastery of St. Paul on Mount Athos, part of a group of seven similar works held in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s collection. The drawings are attributed to a woman who reportedly went ashore disguised in a midshipman’s uniform.
