'Estafiers, Cheval de main, et Palfreniers Indiens'
1650
From the collection of Victoria and Albert Museum
This print shows four people riding small, decorated horses. Their outfits are flashy—big hats with feathers, gold and black coats, and tall boots. The horses have curly manes and fancy tack. Above them, a banner reads *"Estafiers, Cheval de main, et Palfreniers Indiens"* in French. The word *"Indiens"* hints these riders might be dressed as Native American figures, a common (but often inaccurate) style in European art of the time.
