This watercolor shows a tall, half-timbered building with a steep roof and a small dome on top. Below it, a covered walkway has arched openings, and a few people stand or walk around—one group chats near a cart, another man holds a dog’s leash. The sky is pale blue with soft clouds, and the whole scene looks calm and quiet. The artist used light washes of color, keeping the buildings mostly in muted tones while leaving the sky airy. The people and details like the dog and cart add life to the otherwise still architecture. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see this painting in person.
