Overview

This opaque watercolour on paper depicts Radha interrupted while dressing as Krishna arrives unexpectedly, scolded by a maidservant. Radha wears a dark red and blue skirt with a pair of large lotus leaves covering her upper body, while Krishna, in a deep yellow dhoti, holds a lotus flower on a long stalk against an orange background. The scene illustrates a verse from the Rasamanjari, where Radha’s heart metaphorically grows lotus-leaf wings in longing to see him. The painting belongs to an early Pahari series depicting Krishna and Radha in idealised form, with iridescent beetle wing…
