The painting was completed shortly after Marstrand’s return from Italy, a period that reinforced his interest in narrative subjects. It entered the national collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst in the late 19th century and has since been catalogued as a key work illustrating the artist’s engagement with biblical themes.

During the 1840s, Danish art increasingly embraced realistic depictions of historical and religious stories, moving away from idealized classicism.
