Xun Xu employs chiaroscuro to model the figure, creating a subtle sense of volume against a muted background. The brushwork follows conventional Chinese conventions, using delicate lines for the clothing and more robust strokes for the surrounding objects, such as a large cylindrical form and smaller indeterminate items that populate the scene.

Born into the prominent Xun family, Xun Xu served the Cao Wei state before continuing his official duties under the Jin dynasty. Although primarily known for his roles as a musician, painter, and writer, this work reflects his artistic activity in the early 19th century and has remained in the Museum of Ethnography’s holdings since its acquisition.

The painting reflects the broader cultural practice of integrating mythological references—here, a figure linked to water—into everyday scenes. By situating the subject amid ordinary objects, Xun Xu bridges the divine and the mundane, a theme common in Chinese visual culture during the transitional period between the Three Kingdoms and the Jin dynasty.
