The Smoker at the Window is a 1649 by Adriaen van Ostade, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a man sitting by a window, wrapped in a thick coat and hat. He’s holding a pipe, puffing smoke that curls around his face. Outside, a dark landscape with trees and a small building frames the scene. The artist used bold lines and deep shadows to make the man’s face and clothes look almost three-dimensional. The window lets in just enough light to highlight his hands and the pipe. Next, check out chiaroscuro to see how artists use light and dark for drama.
Adriaen van Ostade (baptized as Adriaen Jansz Hendricx 10 December 1610 – buried 2 May 1685) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of genre works, showing the everyday life of ordinary men and women.
