The Holy Family with Saint Elizabeth and Saint John the Baptist is a 1610 ink by Unknown, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows four figures in a rocky, wooded landscape. A seated woman holds a baby on her lap while a standing child leans toward them. Behind them, an older man and a sheep rest on the ground. The scene looks busy but calm, with lots of lines showing folds in clothes and textures in the rocks. The artist used tiny parallel lines to create shadows and depth—this is called cross-hatching. It makes the figures look three-dimensional even though it’s just ink on paper. Check out cross-hatching to see how artists build light and shadow with lines alone.
