Thenot and Colinet Lead their Flocks Together is a 1821 ink by William Blake, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This small black-and-white scene shows two people leading sheep across a field. One person holds a staff, the other a bundle. Behind them, a village with a church steeple sits under a dark sky. The artist used sharp lines and shadows to create depth, focusing on the figures’ movement. This is a wood engraving, which means the image was carved into wood before being printed. Check out the technique: engraving, cross-hatching to see how artists build texture with lines.
William Blake (28 November 1757 – 12 August 1827) was an English poet, painter and printmaker.
