Aurora is a 1733 chalk by François Boucher, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a woman lying on a cloud, her body turned partly toward us. Her hair is loose, and she holds a piece of fabric near her chest. The lines are soft but confident, with light shading to show her curves and the cloud’s shape. The drawing uses only red and white chalk on brown paper, giving it a warm, earthy glow. The artist left some areas rough, like the cloud’s edges, to keep it feeling quick and alive. Next, check out the Baroque movement for more dramatic, flowing art like this.
François Boucher was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher, who worked in the Rococo style.
