Le Château des hiboux (Castle of the Owls) is a 1882 crayon by Félix-Hilaire Buhot, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two scenes side by side. On the left, a round window frame holds a dark, moody landscape with a castle on a hill. People and boats are tiny in the distance. On the right, a theater poster advertises a play called *Exubéris* with a ship and a woman flying. The artist used a mix of techniques to layer textures. The paper looks worn, like it’s been handled a lot. Want to know more? Check out etching to see how artists create depth with ink and metal plates.
