The Holy Family is a 1630 ink by Simone Cantarini, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white drawing shows a woman holding a small child while another woman leans in toward them. The room has a rough, textured wall with a window letting in light. The woman holding the child looks tired but gentle, and the child reaches out toward the other woman. The artist used sharp lines to show fabric folds and faces, making everything look slightly sketchy but full of life. This style was common in etchings, where ink is pressed into a metal plate. Simone Cantarini or Simone da Pesaro, called il Pesarese (Baptized on 21 August 1612 – 15 October 1648) was an Italian painter and etcher.
