Wash Basin and Scent Bottle [recto] is a 1879 graphite by Paul Cezanne, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a simple still life. On the left, a small, dark glass bottle with a stopper sits on a table. To its right, a large, shallow bowl or basin occupies most of the space. The bowl's shape is suggested by gentle, curved lines. Both objects cast shadows on the table, which is only hinted at by a few lines at the bottom of the page. The drawing is done in graphite, with varying line weights and shading that suggest the textures of the objects. The overall effect is one of quiet simplicity. If you like this kind of sketchy still life, you might also enjoy the work of Cezanne, Paul.
Paul Cézanne was born on January 19, 1839, in Aix-en-Provence, the son of a hatter turned wealthy banker.
