The Cloisters, San Lorenzo fuori le mura is a 1824 oil by Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, a Romanticism work, held at Art Institute of Chicago.
A muted sun casts long shadows over worn stone steps and a low doorway. The brick arches look heavy and old, their edges soft in the light. Eckersberg paints Rome’s faded edges, not its famous squares. Here, quiet light picks out cracks in the wall and a single wooden door left ajar. The color stays cool—no bright golds or blues, just grays and off-whites that feel honest. Next time you’re in Chicago, seek it out at the Art Institute of Chicago.
