Overview

This mezzotint by John Constable, published posthumously in a red-bound volume of forty prints, reproduces his landscape painting of Castle Acre Priory. Created by David Lucas under Constable’s supervision, the print emphasizes chiaroscuro through contrasting light and shadow to convey the tactile quality of the original oil sketch. The series, titled *Various Subjects of English Landscape*, sought to promote appreciation of English scenery and justify Constable’s artistic approach.
