Two figures stand in a doorway. One wears a bonnet marked “OPINION PUBLIQUE.” The other is dressed in a formal suit labeled “L’ORDRE.” Their clothes and labels hint at a clash between public opinion and rigid order. Daumier often used satire to mock France’s leaders. He made hundreds of political lithographs in the 1800s. This one first appeared in a news sheet called La Lithographie. Look up lithography next.
