Le Petit Thiers, Baptisé Doctrinaire is a 1835 ink by Honoré Daumier, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This lithograph shows a small crowd gathered around a baby’s baptism. The priest’s face is serious, but the parents and godparents look bored or distracted. Daumier uses exaggerated expressions to poke fun at the ritual’s pomp. He made this during a time when artists often mocked social customs. The style matches his usual sharp humor, not the usual serious church art. If you like this kind of sharp wit, check out more by Daumier, Honoré.
Honoré-Victorin Daumier was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, whose many works offer commentary on the social and political life in France, from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870.
