Les èleves de l'institution Pascareau essayent un nouvel uniforme ... is a 1846 ink by Honoré Daumier, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This lithograph shows kids in stiff new uniforms fidgeting under a man’s watchful eye. Some look bored. Others grin or scowl. The lines are scratchy but sharp. Daumier loved poking fun at rules. Here he mocks school uniforms with tiny rebellions. Dark shading makes the cloth look heavy and real. Check out another Daumier, Honoré, for more sharp social jokes.
Honoré-Victorin Daumier was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, whose many works offer commentary on the social and political life in France, from the Revolution of 1830 to the fall of the Second French Empire in 1870.
