About this work

This is a black-and-white portrait of a woman with a serious expression. She wears a high-collared dress with lace ruffs at her neck and wrists. A pearl necklace and a star-shaped brooch sit on her chest. Her hair is piled high, with curls framing her face. Around her head is a crown-like design, and a coat of arms appears above it. Notice the tiny cross-hatching lines that create shadows and texture—this is how the artist built up the details. The border is packed with swirling patterns and text naming the sitter. Look up engraving to see how artists use metal plates and sharp tools to make these precise, detailed prints.
