Il Tedeschino is a 1637 ink by Stefano Della Bella, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a man in fancy clothes riding a strong horse. He holds a flag and wears a wide-brimmed hat. Behind him, a small winged boy holds a crown and a scroll. The horse’s muscles are drawn sharply, and the background has a distant town with domes and trees. The artist used fine lines to show texture, like the horse’s fur and the rider’s armor. This kind of print is called an etching, where the design is scratched into metal before printing. Look up technique: etching to see how it works.
Stefano della Bella (18 May 1610 – 12 July 1664) was an Italian draughtsman and printmaker known for etchings of a great variety of subjects, including military and court scenes, landscapes, and lively genre scenes.
