River Landscape with Horseman is a 1634 ink by Jacob Duck, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a lone rider on horseback by a riverbank. The rider wears a wide-brimmed hat and holds a stick, while the horse walks through shallow water. In the background, a rocky hill rises with a few small buildings on top, and a distant tower or church spire peeks over the trees. The artist used fine lines to show texture—notice how the horse’s fur and the water’s surface look almost three-dimensional. This was done with a technique called etching. Look up etching to see how artists like Jacob Duck made prints like this.
Jacob Duck (also Ducq, Duyck, Duick, Duc) (1600 – buried 22/28 January 1667) was a Dutch painter and etcher.
