Shepherds and Flock with Woman and Camel is a 1646 ink by Stefano Della Bella, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows a woman sitting on a rock, watching over a herd of goats and a camel. The animals are scattered across a hilly, grassy landscape with trees in the background. The scene looks busy but calm, with careful lines showing every fold of cloth and tuft of fur. The artist used fine, detailed lines to create depth and texture, a trick of this printmaking method. This kind of image was often made to study light and movement in everyday life. Next, check out the technique: etching.
Stefano della Bella (18 May 1610 – 12 July 1664) was an Italian draughtsman and printmaker known for etchings of a great variety of subjects, including military and court scenes, landscapes, and lively genre scenes.
