River at the Foot of a High Rock is a 1650 ink by Allart van Everdingen, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This picture shows a rocky hill rising steeply from a riverbank. At the top, a few small buildings cling to the edge, while trees and bushes cover the slopes. Below, the water is calm, with a couple of tiny figures near the shore—one looks like they’re rowing a boat. The artist used fine lines to show texture, like the rough rocks and wavy water. The sky has soft clouds, and the whole scene feels quiet and still. If you like this style, check out the technique: etching.
Allaert van Everdingen (Dutch pronunciation: ; bapt. 18 June 1621 – 8 November 1675 (buried)), was a Dutch Golden Age painter and printmaker in etching and mezzotint.
