About this work

This is a black-and-white portrait of a man sitting indoors. He’s wearing glasses, a white shirt, a vest, and a bow tie. His hands rest on a piece of paper or a small board, and he looks focused, almost like he’s sketching. Behind him, a window with heavy curtains lets in soft light. The title says he’s drawing on a stone, but here it looks more like paper. The artist used shading to make the face and clothes stand out clearly. Look up chiaroscuro to see how this strong light-and-dark contrast works.
