Italian Joust of Peace is a 1514 ink by German 16th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows two knights on horseback smashing lances in a joust. One lance shatters against shiny armor while the other horse rears up. The colors are soft, but the moment feels sharp. Most drawings like this show real battles. This one shows a fake fight for fun, called a “joust of peace.” The artist used watercolor with thin glazes to give depth without heavy lines. Check out how the glazing makes the metal look real at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
A German artist from the late 1500s drew lively scenes of knights clashing in parades and mock battles.
