Italian Joust of Peace is a 1514 ink by German 16th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
Two armored knights on horseback crash lances in a joust. One wooden lance shatters against the other’s polished steel armor. Bright silk banners snap in the air behind them. This drawing mixes watercolor washes with fine ink lines. The artist used glazing, layering see-through colors to build depth in the armor and sky. A faint leadpoint underdrawing guides the ink work. Look for the same glowing colors and dramatic clash next time you visit the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
A German artist from the late 1500s drew lively scenes of knights clashing in parades and mock battles.
