No se puede saber por que (One Can't Tell Why) is a 1863 ink by Francisco Goya, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a group of skeletal figures dressed like medieval knights or monks. They’re huddled together in what looks like a dim, wooden room, holding crosses and books. Some have hats with crosses on them, and one figure sits on the floor, almost forgotten. The figures’ bones are exposed, but they still wear robes and hold symbols of power or faith. The text at the bottom says *"No se puede saber por qué"*—which means *"One can’t tell why"*—adding a layer of mystery. If this style intrigues you, look up etching to see how artists carve images into metal plates.
Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (; Spanish: ; 30 March 1746 – 16 April 1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker.
