Jan van Os created the painting *Still Life with Flowers, Fruit and Birds* in 1774. The work was produced during a period when the artist, based in The Hague, had recently been registered as a member of the painters' confraternity Confrérie Pictura in 1773. Although van Os began his career painting seascapes, he had shifted his focus to floral and fruit still lifes by this date, adopting the style of Jan van Huysum. The painting was executed two years before his marriage to Susanna de La Croix in 1775 and represents his established reputation in the genre of flower painting within the Dutch Republic.
Context
Jan van Os (1744-1808) was a Dutch painter best known for fruit and flower still lifes, a genre in which *Still Life with Flowers, Fruit and Birds* (1774) participates. Trained by Aert Schouman in The Hague, he initially painted seascapes before turning to floral compositions modeled on the style of Jan van Huysum, typically arranging blooms on a marble ledge against a green background. His still lifes brought him an international reputation, with works exhibited in England, France, and Germany. He is regarded as the founding figure of the Van Os family of artists: his children Pieter Gerardus van Os, Maria Margaretha van Os, and Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os, as well as his grandson Pieter Frederik van Os, all became painters, and he instructed them along with Petronella van Woensel.
