Niagara Falls in Winter is a 1868 oil by Jasper Francis Cropsey, a Hudson River School Movement work, held at Art Institute of Chicago.
You see a frozen Niagara Falls: jagged ice, mist turned to frost, and a pale winter sky. Cropsey painted this in his New York studio, using sketches he made on-site years earlier. The ice isn’t just white—look close and you’ll spot blues, grays, even hints of pink where the light catches it. If you like how he builds winter light, try glazing—layering thin, transparent paint to create depth.
