This painting shows a single lion standing guard over a rocky outcrop. Its tawny coat catches the light while the dark background pushes it forward. The lion looks alert but calm, like it’s watching for movement in the distance. Gérôme often painted lions from sketches. He visited zoos and even hunted them in Africa to get the details right. This one feels alive in a way that’s almost too real. If you like this, check out another Gérôme lion painting at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
