History & Provenance
Juan de Flandes created The Baptism of Christ in 1508 as an oil on panel. The work was commissioned around that year by Don Sancho de Castilla for the altarpiece of the main chapel in the Church of San Lázaro, Palencia. A 1761 document confirms the painting remained in the church until at least that year.
By 1952, the panel had been acquired in Spain by the art dealer Frederick Mont in New York. The Samuel H. Kress Foundation purchased the painting from Mont on February 11, 1953, and subsequently gifted it to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in 1961.
The Baptism of Christ is held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., under the accession number 1961.9.22. The painting was originally located in the main chapel altarpiece of the Church of San Lázaro in Palencia, where it remained until at least 1761. By 1952, the panel was with Frederick Mont in New York, who stated he had acquired the work in Spain.
The Samuel H. Kress Foundation purchased the painting on February 11, 1953, subsequently gifting it to the National Gallery of Art in 1961 as part of the Samuel H. Kress Collection.
