This print shows two men in traditional robes sitting on a raised platform. One holds a fan, the other a scroll, both looking thoughtful. Behind them, a night scene with buildings, lanterns, and a red sign with white text. The sky is dark with white stars, and boats float on water in the distance. The red sign in the top corner has Japanese characters—this isn’t just decoration. It’s a real place name, marking a warehouse district. Look up The Metropolitan Museum of Art to see this print in person.
These five linked woodblock prints show a single evening scene sliced into a pentaptych, with each sheet named for its publisher: Jukakudō, Jugyōdō, Juyōdō, Jushōdō, and Hōgadō.
