Lumber Yard is a 1804 by Katsushika Hokusai, a Romanticism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This scene shows a busy lumber yard with three workers. One man is perched on a high stack of bricks, bending over to place something. Another stands on the ground, holding a long board, while a third kneels, adjusting a piece of wood. The yard is packed with piles of lumber, bamboo fences, and simple wooden buildings in the background. Notice how the artist uses flat colors and sharp outlines to show depth. The workers’ clothes and tools look everyday, not fancy. Check out The Cleveland Museum of Art to see more works by this artist.
Katsushika Hokusai spent his life in Edo, now Tokyo, where he drew and carved prints for a living.
