Here’s a man in a dark coat, his face lit like a candle in a dim room. The painting is life-sized—unusual for Périn, who usually worked small. That size lets every wrinkle and shadow show, almost like he’s stepping out of the frame. Most of his portraits were tiny, meant to be held in the hand. This one feels different: no client to please, no tiny brushstrokes. Just him, looking back at us. If you like how light and shadow play here, look up *chiaroscuro*.
