James Stanley, Seventh Earl of Derby is a 1668 ink by David Loggan, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a serious-looking man with a white wig and a long beard. He’s wearing a dark robe and holding a string of beads in one hand while resting the other on a closed book. Next to him sits an hourglass, and the background is a plain oval frame with Latin words wrapped around it. The Latin text calls him "Magister Johannes Carter Fideli Servi" — which means he was likely a respected teacher or scholar. The careful lines and shading give the image a three-dimensional look.
