Anne of Austria is a 1634 ink by Balthasar Moncornet, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a woman with curly hair and a serious expression. She’s dressed in a high-collared outfit with a bow at the neck, and her hands rest on a dark fabric. Above her head, a crown and chains hang as symbols of power. The edges of the image are framed by a decorative border with a coat of arms. The text below her name reads *"Anne D’Austriche Royne Regente de France et de Navarre"*, meaning she ruled France and Navarre. The artist’s name, Moncornet, is printed at the bottom. This is an engraving, a printmaking technique where lines are carved into a metal plate.
Balthasar Moncornet (1600, Rouen – 1668, Paris) was a French painter, engraver, and tapissier revered for his depictions of around 45 different prominent figures of the 17th century.
