The work is an oil on canvas measuring roughly 100 × 66 cm and belongs to the Impressionist movement.
Rouen Cathedral, West Façade, Sunlight has been held by the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., since 1963, when it entered the collection as part of the bequest of Chester Dale (1882–1962) of New York. Prior to that acquisition, the painting had passed from the artist to the dealer Durand-Ruel in Paris and was subsequently placed on a joint account with Bernheim-Jeune, also in Paris. The work was sold on 10 November 1926 to Chester Dale.
