Sunrise—The Pond, Easthampton, Long Island is a 1881 ink by Thomas Moran, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a quiet pond surrounded by tangled branches and reeds. The water is rough in places, with small waves or ripples drawn in quick, dark lines. Above, the sky looks soft and cloudy, with birds flying near the top edge. The artist used a sharp tool to scratch into the metal plate before printing, which creates those jagged, textured lines. This method is called drypoint. Look up drypoint to see how it works.
Thomas Moran (February 12, 1837 – August 25, 1926) was an American painter and printmaker of the Hudson River School in New York whose work often featured the Rocky Mountains.
