Mathieu Mole is a 1653 ink by Robert Nanteuil, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of an older man with a long white beard and curly hair. He’s wearing a dark collar that stands up around his neck. The background is plain, but the face is framed by a round border with tight, parallel lines inside it. The small crest at the bottom looks like a family symbol, maybe showing his status. The whole image is made by scratching lines into metal—this isn’t paint. Next, check out how engraving works.
Robert Nanteuil (French pronunciation: ; 1623 – 9 December 1678) was a French portrait artist: engraver, draughtsman and pastellist to the court of Louis XIV.
